Where It All Began

Our Story

A man in a suit smokes a cigar.

Our story begins nearly a century ago with Eugene H. Phifer, a builder and broker who helped shape Washington’s neighborhoods as we know them today. In the early 1920s, he founded Eugene H. Phifer Realty, Inc. and set out to build sturdy, welcoming homes in growing corners of the city — especially east of the Anacostia River, in places like Fort Dupont, Hillcrest, and Brookland.

While downtown skyscrapers rose, Phifer focused on the heart of the city: families, working people, and tight-knit blocks. He developed hundreds of homes and small apartment buildings — classic brick walk-ups and garden-style clusters — designed to blend with leafy streets and local shops. Many of these buildings still stand today, part of the everyday life of DC’s neighborhoods.

His approach was simple and lasting: solid construction, thoughtful upkeep, and a genuine connection with the people who call these buildings home. The business stayed in the family and carried on through partners like Robert H. Plante — and today, Eugene’s grandchildren remain proudly involved, caring for  the same buildings and communities their grandfather built.

We’re honored to keep that spirit alive. We care for each property like it’s part of the neighborhood’s fabric — because it is. For generations, our communities have offered dependable, local housing with a personal touch. And that’s exactly how we plan to keep it.
